What You Should Know About Backyard Hammocks

July 11th, 2010

Relaxing in a hammock is one of the highlights of backyard living. There’s no better way to spend a lazy summer afternoon. Most people will be perfectly content when gently swaying in a hammock while enjoying the sun and warm breezes. And you don’t even have to feel guilty about it. By spending some time unwinding in a hammock, people can reduce their stress levels. There are numerous medical conditions that are linked to stress, so you want to do everything you can to relax.

A hammock is essentially a hanging sling that allows you to lie down while suspended. People use it for sleeping in, or just relaxing. Cotton and rope are the most traditional materials used in hammock making. However, some manmade fabrics, such as specially produced polyester, are actually longer wearing and easier to clean. Hammocks are made from woven fabric that allows some air to get through. Still, webbed or netted hammocks are believed to be the most comfortable of all.

A hammock is considered to be a very comfortable environment in which to rest or sleep. This is due to its highly stable center of gravity. Some people are afraid of falling out of the hammock when they’re sleeping. However, because of its design and function, a hammock is safe and secure. The hammock’s sides wrap around and partially enclose you. So it’s virtually unheard of for someone to fall out.

Originally, an outdoor hammock was attached to two sturdy trees. Of course you could still do this, but a lot of people don’t have a yard or trees that can accommodate this setup. A hammock stand is the ideal solution to this problem. A stand will allow you to position the hammock wherever it’s most suitable. A hammock stand is made from either metal or wood materials. The more durable of the two, however, is the metal stand. And it will look good for some time to come with only a bit of annual maintenance. If you don’t have a lot of space, a hammock chair or hammock swing is a good alternative. It’s simple to arrange one or two of these on your patio, deck or front porch.

In setting up the hammock, read and follow the instructions exactly. Don’t take the chance of winging it. It’s important that the hammock be set up correctly and securely. Otherwise, it can be a risk to yourself or anyone else who may lay on it.
